Race up The Beast – 8th June 2016.
Wednesday evening saw the return of one of the favorite summer series, ‘Race up The Beast’ at Maeshafan.
With new host club Clwydian Range Runners marking out the route and organising the event for 2016, all the runners on the start line gave a round of applause to John Morris of Buckley Runners, who had organised the race for the last 7 years – Thank you John.
As the temperature dipped below 20⁰c for the first time all day, a gentle breeze picked up just enough to cool the runners down as they lined up for the start. Just over 90 runners turned up to tackle The Beast, taking on a slightly modified route from previous years, that saw the 7.5Km race route finish right outside the pub door.
In the men’s race, first over the line with a sprint finish was Karl Steiniegger, Ambleside AC, in a mind blowing time of 36.44. Second place went to Michael Corrales, NWRCC, in a photo finish time of 36.44.5. Third spot on the night went to Buckley Runner Jez Brown in a time of 37.11. Jez also won the male v40 race.
The ladies race winner was Hayley Evans, representing Buckley Runners, in an impressive time of 46.39. Second lady was Laura Baynham-Hughes from Helsby Runners, in 49.20 and third lady Karen Forster finished in 51.35, also taking the F50 win for Calder Valley.
In the age categories, lady v40 went to Ciara Murphy from Chester Tri in 54.07 and Male v50 was won by Dave Shepard, competing for VRAC in a time of 44.11. The male V60 title went to Vince Edwards of Deestriders, in 48.62 and the male V70 went to none other than Buckley’s very own John Morris.
John also took the ‘most team members’ prize, a sack of potatoes, on behalf of Buckley runners who promptly shared the 12.5kg of Maris Pipers between the 20 runners that had turned up to run.
A massive thanks goes to all the helpers, to the Miners Arms pub, the marshals and time keepers.
A very special thanks goes to the Trinity Fammau Scout Group from Gwenaffield for volunteering to marshal our race.
Thanks to all of you that came along and for all the positive feedback that we received.
Happy running and see you all next year.
CRR.
This Wednesday is ‘The Beast’ trail race from Maeshafan.
the distance is 7.5Km with 430m of ascent.
Registration 5:30 onwards in the Miners Arms pub – Maeshafan. Race starts at 7 .15pm.
£4 entry on the day – with any proceeds given to Charity, not like some races that charge £23 each just to make lots of profit !!
Also thank you to John Morris who has organised this race for the past many years and for letting CRR take it over.
We had a very successful Emergency first aid course for Mountain runners, delivered by Conwy Training, on 20th March 2016.
This was a bespoke course aimed at mountain runners / cyclists and was provided for all members and for those who have helped marshal at our races over the last few months.
Hopefully the skills learned will never have to be used, but it will perhaps come in useful if caught out on a mountain or in a race marshaling situation.
The course was paid for by the Clwydian Range Runners club. Thanks to all who attended and to Pilar for the fantastic training. Thank you also to Denbighshire Countryside Services for the use of the Loggerheads conference room.
Why not join us for the official opening of the 10Km trail route at Coed Llandegla.
Registration from 9:30am – £5 – 11:00am start. See you there.
Dash in the Dark – 3 22nd January 2016
First home for the ladies and setting a new female course record was Kirsty Seddon , Chester Tri in a blistering time of 31.37. Second over the line was Rebecca Robberts, Clwydian in 35.13 and in third place Kate Murphy, Outward Bound in 36.14.
As the field lined up for the start, the men’s race favourite and course record holder, Karl Steinegger looked set to take his third race and overall title for Ambleside AC. Indeed, in true form, taking the win was Karl in 25.35, only challenged on the night by Simon Edwards from Buckley Runners in 27.36. Simon also took the V40 win. Third overall for the men was Joe Dogherty from Outward Bound in 28.54.
The rest of the prizes on the night went to ladies Jan Rodgers (V50), Chester Tri 36.18 and Ellie Robinson (V40), West Cheshire AC 37.04. The men’s category winners were Steve Toogood (V50) Buckley 29.11, Chris Wilcox (V60) Clwydian 32.03 and John Morris (V70) Buckley 45.45.
The series overall winners this year, with 3 out of 3 were Kirsty Seddon and Karl Steinegger. Well done !
Dash in the Dark 3 – THIS FRIDAY.
22nd January 2016– Dash in the Dark – Race 3. distance 6.5km
Regrettably we have had to make the decision to postpone the Dash in the Dark race this evening.
Despite the valiant efforts of the OPA staff, the car park and visitors centre should be open later today, but the access road remains untreated and has a significant covering of ice and snow this morning.
With more snow forecast later today, and the temperatures set to drop below freezing this evening, it would be irresponsible to continue with the race.
We would have liked for the race to have gone ahead but with the access roads into the forest itself being closed, vehicular rescues will not be possible, so any assistance will be a long way off if required. In other words, if we had an accident out on the trail, we could not ensure correct treatment was available.
Please keep an eye on the website for updates as we plan to hold the race on Friday 22nd January instead.
Due to heavy snowfall the access road, visitor centre and car park will be closed.

We will be working closely with OPA to see if ‘Dash in the Dark 3’ will go ahead.
Fingers crossed.
Dont forget the last in the series of Dash in the Dark will be this Friday, 15th Jan at 7pm.
Hopefully see you at Coed Llandegla for some fun in the dark !
